Working with Bubble Map Chart
Create A Tooltip Page
Following are the step-by-step instructions on making a Tooltip page. Here we are using dummy data for some corporations working worldwide and we need to create a tooltip for a Bubble Map chart.
Step 1: Create a Tooltip Page
- Click on the + Sign at the bottom ribbon to add a new page
- On the new page, in the Visualization Panel, click on the Format page
- Rename the page to something meaningful, such as “City Tooltip”.
- Toggle on the Tooltip option to designate this as a tooltip page. This allows you to call the page inside any visual.
- Open the canvas settings dropdown menu and select the tooltip in the Type option if not selected automatically.
- Now, open the Canvas background dropdown menu and select your desired color and transparency.
Step 2: Populate a Tooltip page
You can populate your tooltip page with any visualizations relevant to your tooltip, such as bar charts, KPIs, or tables. Ensure that visuals complement the main report by providing deeper insights into the data. Keep the layout compact and clear, using appropriate font sizes and colours to maintain readability. Arrange visuals effectively to avoid clutter, focusing on key metrics that enhance the main visual.
Let us populate the visual with existing cards.
- Select the cards at once and copy from the Clipboard section in the Home ribbon or Ctrl+C
- Open your tooltip page
- Click on Paste in the Clipboard Section of the Home Ribbon or Ctrl+V
- Resize and arrange the cards in the ToolTip Page accordingly.
Step 3: Add charts to a Tooltip
Bar charts are one of the most common chart types, used to compare values. A Bar Chart is like a Column chart with a horizontal orientation.
Here you will learn how to use bar charts in the tooltips of a Power BI report page.
- Click on the City Tool Tip page in the Page Ribbon.
- Click on the Clustered Bar Chart in the Visualizations pane
- Drag and drop the X-axis and Y-axis from your data, in this example, we want to filter the revenue by city.
Note: Click on Format in the Visualizations pane to access Format options and Set the Y-Axis > Title > Off. For a better visualization experience.
Step 4: Introduce the Tooltip to the visual
- Go to your main report page and click on the visual where you want to add your tooltip.
- Open the Format in the Visualizations pane to access Format options.
- Click on the General tab and open the drop-down menu for Tooltips.
- Select your tooltip page in the Page section.
- Now when you hover over any region on the map, your custom-created tooltip will appear.
Instead of the built-in less interactive tooltip.
Tips and Tricks for the Best Practice
- Keep It Simple: Avoid adding too many visuals that may clutter the tooltip.
- Ensure Readability: Use clear labels, concise text, and appropriate font sizes.
- Maintain Performance: Avoid complex calculations that might slow down the tooltip rendering.
- Test with Different Devices: Ensure the tooltip displays correctly on various screen sizes.
- Hide the tooltip pages: as they are not intended for direct user interaction.
Conclusion
Tooltip pages in Power BI provide an efficient way of displaying additional data without overwhelming the main report page.
