What is a Trendline?

In data visualization, a trendline is a statistical tool that shows the general direction of data over time. A trendline levels out out variability to reveal the underlying pattern rather than concentrating on short-term fluctuations vs daily spikes or drops in website traffic or social media activity.

Why is Trendline important?

Here is why trendlines are important:

  • Easily Identify Trends: Is your revenue going up at a gradual pace? Have customer support inquiries been decreasing for a while? A trendline will give you the main direction of the trend in one glance.
  • Find Patterns: It gives you the opportunity to look beyond all the noise around the trend. You may have had a great sales month last month and a poor sales month this month, but the trendline could show that the general direction is still positive.
  • Basic Forecasting: Although not an accurate predictor or an actual forecasting model, the trendline can provide you with a good idea of what to expect in the future so you can create better goals and make more informed decisions.

The trendline allows you to look at your data in terms of a comparison of how your business has performed over the course of time. A descriptive chart becomes more of an analytical chart with the addition of a trendline.
