Key Influencer in Power BI: An AI-Enhanced Visualization
Table of Contents
Introduction
Key Influencer in Power BI is one of the native AI Visuals that uses the power of Machine Learning algorithms to uncover the underlying patterns in your data. Therefore, Key Influencer Visual helps you to find the indicators that affect the variable under consideration. Furthermore, the Key influencer ranks the indicators and provides reasons for their influence.
In this tutorial, you will learn how to use Key Influencer visual in your reports to identify the factors that most impact your business metrics, uncover hidden patterns, and make data-driven decisions with greater clarity.
Key Influencer in Power BI

Feel free to follow our guide step by step by opening the exercise file at the end of the Blog.
For our example, the Quantity of Product is the metric of interest. In this exercise, we will analyse the dataset using Key Influencer Visual to uncover the factors influencing the Revenue.
Key Influencer Visuals works on two fields: Analyze and Explained by.
However, in this exercise, we will analyze the Quantity of Product Sold, which can be explained by:
- Order Method Type: The method used by the customer to order the product, such as web, sales visit, email, etc.
- Retailer Type: The retailer method used for transactions such as sports stores, outdoor shops, etc.
- Urgent: Did the customer require urgent delivery?
Step-by-Step Implementation of Key Influencer
To use Key Influencer Visual:
- First, select Key Influencer Visual from the Visuals available in the Visualizations Pane.
- Then, drag and drop the:
- Quantity Sold from the Sales Table to the Analyze Field.
- Order Method Type from Sales Table to the Explain by Field.
- Retailer Type from Sales Table to the Explain by Field.
- This gives us the visual:
The values in the key influencer can be understood by adding ‘when’ at the start of each statement and appending with the average value of Quantity Sold increases by before the numerical result. For example, when the retailer type is Outdoors Shop then the average Quantity Sold increases by 688.4.
- Now, drag and drop the Urgent from Sales Table to the Explain by Field.
Notice that the Urgent has no effect as an influencer on the key metric.
- Then, click on Top Segments on the Right of Key Influencers.
- Moving forward, from the ‘When is Quantity more likely to be dropdown’ select Low.
- This is what your visual should look like:
- Now, click on Segment 1.
Understanding the Outcomes for the Key Influencer Visual
A complete analysis report for the factors influencing Product Quantity sold has been generated by Power BI. This visual demonstrates that:
- The products are sold through sports stores
- Low Quantity Sold is most prevalent when orders are not placed online.
Businesses can use this kind of information to reassess retailer performance, optimize ordering channels, or enhance sales strategies.
Conclusion
Key Influencer in Power BI is an incredibly user-friendly tool for finding significant Influences in your data. You can rapidly determine which retailer types or order methods have the greatest impact on sales performance and which factors have little to no influence by examining Quantity Sold.
This feature is crucial for finding hidden insights and making data-driven decisions, regardless of your familiarity with Power BI or level of experience with sophisticated AI visuals.
FAQs
Key Influencer Visual is an AI-powered tool that finds the variables that have the biggest effects on a given metric. It lists these influencers in order of importance and describes how each one influences the result.
Power BI analyzes patterns in your data using machine learning and statistical algorithms. Every field in the “Explain by” section is tested to determine the degree to which it influences the Analyze metric.
It is most effective when used in the following situations:
- A numerical metric (like revenue or quantity sold).
- Categorical fields (such as Retailer Type and Order Method Type)
- Data that is clean, organized, and has sufficient records for analysis
This indicates that there is no statistically significant correlation between the field and the metric. To put it simply, altering that field has no discernible effect on the value under analysis.
Yes. Reports and dashboards published to Power BI Service can be accessed using the Power BI Mobile app, including through QR code scanning.
