Table of Contents
What is Power BI Data Profiling?
Power BI Data profiling refers to the process of analyzing and understanding the characteristics and quality of your data. It provides insights into the structure, patterns, and statistics of your data, helping you assess its quality, identify issues, and make informed decisions during the data preparation and modeling stages.
Data profiling helps us easily find the issues with our imported data in Power BI. Also, it is an integral part of Model Design as it provides ultimate insights into data.
Power BI’s Data Profiling feature consists of five options.
- Monospaced
- Show whitespace
- Column quality
- Column distribution
- Column profile
We will walk through each of them in this chapter.

Column Distribution is a feature which enables you to visualize the distribution of data in the column. It is based on the occurrence of a value in the column.
To visualize a column distribution:
- Click on View Tab in the Ribbon Menu.
- Now, select the Check box to the left of Column distribution.
- Then, select the Relevant Table in the Queries Pane.

To preview white space:
- Click on View Tab in the Ribbon menu.
- Select the Check box to the left of Show Whitespace.
- Select the Relevant Table in the Queries Pane.
Conclusion
Power BI Data profiling is an essential step for ensuring clean, accurate, and high-quality data before building reports and dashboards. With tools like Column Quality, Column Profile, Column Distribution, Monospace view, and Show Whitespace, Power Query makes it easy to identify errors, remove empty values, and understand the structure of your dataset.
By leveraging these features, users can streamline data preparation, improve model performance, and create more reliable insights. Mastering data profiling ultimately leads to better decision-making and more trustworthy Power BI analytics.
