This guide explains what Power BI Service is, its core components, how workspaces function, and how users can share insights using features like QR codes and PowerPoint exports.

What is Power BI Service and Power BI Service Features

Power BI Service is one of the three major components of Power BI, the other two being Power BI Desktop and Power BI Mobile. You can also refer to it as Power BI Web and access it by visiting https://app.powerbi.com. Power BI Service allows users to centrally create, manage, consume, and share reports and dashboards. Being a web-based application, it comes with an inherent feature of ease of access from anywhere. Of course, only authorized individuals can access it. The core of the Power BI Service lies in its Workspace, where the majority of activities such as managing datasets, reports, dashboards, and dataflows take place.

Datasets:

A collection of data compiled and arranged in a tabular format, which is imported from or is connected to a source.

Reports:

Reports are a collection of one or more pages containing multiple visualizations (Graph, Charts, etc.) representing key insights from a single dataset.

Dashboards:

A dashboard displays a montage of visual tiles sourced from multiple reports. Also, it gives a single page perspective of key insights from different reports.

Workbooks:

You can use it like Excel Online to view and interact with Excel files.

Dataflows:

You can create and maintain dataflows only in workspaces (not My Workspace), and they store entities in the Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2 Common Data Model.
