What is the Power BI Semantic Model?

The Power BI semantic model can be viewed as a logical layer containing transformations, calculations, and relationships between data sources needed to create reports and dashboards. The semantic model serves as a single source of truth for reports within an organization.

Semantic Model Modes for Power BI Service

The three semantic model modes for Power BI are:
  • Import Mode

It works by importing data into Power BI. It delivers fast performance since data is stored in memory. It’s best for high-speed querying, large datasets optimized for in-memory processing, and complex transformations.

  • DirectQuery Mode

In this mode data remains in the source. Power BI sends queries directly to the data source. No data is stored in the power BI.

  • Compound Mode (Hybrid from Import + DirectQuery)

Combines both import and DirectQuery modes in a single model. Enables which tables are imported and which tables are asked live.

Ways to Create Power BI Semantic models

The Power BI Semantic Model represents a data source that is ready for reporting and visualization. You can create a Power Bi semantic model using the following Methods :

  • Connectiontoan existing data model not hosted in Power
  • LoadsthePower BI Desktop file containing the
  • Upload an Excel workbook that contains one or more Excel tables and/or a workbook data model, or upload a comma-separated values (CSV) file.

How to Publish and Use Semantics Models

1. Building the Semantic Model

The model should include relationships, measurements, and other important components. For example;

  • Tables: De facto tables and dimension tables (sales, products, dates, etc.)
  • Measurements: Key performance indicators (KPIs) such as total sales, profits, sales.
  • Relationship: Connections between tables.

2. Publishing the Model to Power BI Service

Publishing Power bi -service model Click on the Power BI desktop. Select work area Publish both Power BI reports and semantic models to the cloud.

3.Using Semantics Models in Reports

After publication, you can access the semantic model for creating additional reports.

4.Shared Work (Optional) Reports in the Workspace

This allows reports to connect to datasets in different workspaces. Power BI administrators must enable the use of semantics models in their workspace.

Best Practices for Semantics Models.

  • Make sure you use RLS (row-level security) to see what data is accessible only to certified users.
  • Unless this is absolutely necessary, define a relationship as a single orientation. Use active relationships carefully.
  • Avoid complex many-to-many relationships. This can cause performance issues.
  • Make sure your semantics model is well documented so that other users understand the logic behind important metrics and table relationships.

Conclusion

If you follow the best practices described in this blog post, you can create an effective and efficient semantic model that acts as a single credible source for your company’s reporting requirements. Using the power of a semantic model, both technical and non-technical users can analyze data and answer business questions.
