What’s New in Microsoft Power BI: August 2026 Update

Table of Contents

Introduction

Power BI continues to evolve with the updates that make report development more flexible, visualizations more polished, and data management easier for reporting. The August 2026 Power BI update brought improvements across reporting, modelling, data connectivity, mobile experiences, and developer workflows. With a strong focus on making everyday Power BI tasks more efficient.

Among the many additions this month, five updates stand out for their practical impact. In this blog, we will do a deep dive on these five updates.

Modern Visual Defaults & Theme Customization

Power BI’s Modern Visual Defaults and Customizing Theme Improvements make it easier to create consistent, professional-looking reports. The preview introduces a Fluent 2-inspired theme with updated visual styles, spacing, rounded corners, and a modern canvas layout.

The improved theme experience also includes visual-specific style presets for charts, tables, slicers, buttons, and cards. Report authors can customize the base theme and apply formatting consistently across visuals, while still having the flexibility to override individual settings when needed.

For organizations managing multiple reports, this can significantly reduce the repetitive formatting work while making dashboards look more professional and consistent.

Granular Semantic Model Refresh Controls

Refreshing semantic models require more control than simply refreshing everything. August 2026 introduces more granular refresh options in the Power BI service.

The refresh experience now provides separate choices for refreshing schema and data, syncing schema only, or refreshing data only. This gives developers and data teams more flexibility when making changes to their semantic models.

The update is especially useful when only one part of a model needs attention. Rather than repeatedly performing a complete refresh, users can select the type of refresh that matches the required task.

For larger models and frequently updated datasets, more targeted refresh operations can help make development and maintenance workflows more efficient.

OneLake File URLs Come to Power BI Visuals and Maps

One of the most important and useful connectivity improvements in August 2026 is the general availability of OneLake file URLs for report visuals and maps.

Images stored in OneLake can now be used directly in several Power BI experiences; including image visuals, table and matrix cells, cards, list slicers and buttons. Power BI can handle authentication for viewers helping organizations use centrally stored assets without having to maintain separate image-hosting solutions.

The capability also extends to mapping scenarios. Azure Maps reference layers and Shape Maps can use OneLake file URLs, opening additional possibilities for organizations who maintain geographic or visual assets within their Fabric environment.

This update strengthens the connection between Power BI reporting and Microsoft Fabric’s OneLake storage layer.

Donut Charts Get a Built-In Center Value

Donut charts are getting a small but significantly useful visualization improvement: the ability to display a value directly in the centre of the chart.

Before this update, report authors often used an additional card visual positioned over a donut chart to display total or key measure. With the new centre-value capability, the information can be displayed as part of the donut itself.

The centre value can dynamically respond to the interactions such as filtering, cross-highlighting, drill-down, and slice selection. This makes it easier to create compact KPI-style visuals without relying on additional overlay elements.

Matrix and Slicer Formatting Gets More Flexible

August 2026 also introduced several improvements to commonly used Power BI visuals, particularly matrices and slicers.

Matrix visuals: now provides better control over column headers, including expand and collapse functionalities for column hierarchies. +/- icons appear on the column headers, so you can combine groups or reveal more detail directly in the visual. You can customize the color and size of the +/- icons under Column headers > +/- icons in the format pane.

The Date Picker slicer is now generally available, supporting relative date selections, calendar-based date ranges, and single-date selection. Relative date options can also be anchored to different points in the available date range.

Honourable Mentions

Beyond these five highlights, Microsoft’s August 2026 update includes several other notable improvements. These include:

  • Mobile export to Excel:Power BI mobile users can now export report data to Excel more conveniently, while working from their mobile devices.
  • One-tap report rotation:Mobile users can quickly switch between portrait and landscape orientations, with a single tap for a better viewing experience.
  • Faster PBIP and VS Code roundtripping:Developers now get improved performance when moving between Power BI Project files and VS Code during development workflows.
  • Copilot summaries and narratives:Copilot can now include insights from visuals that are hidden by bookmarks, helping generate more complete report summaries and narratives.

Conclusion

The August 2026 Power BI update delivers a broad set of improvements across report design, semantic model management, data connectivity, and visualization. All these updates have addressed practical challenges Power BI users face when building and maintaining reports. As Power BI continues to develop alongside Microsoft Fabric, updates like these show the platforms’ ongoing focus on making analytics more flexible, connected and easier to manage.
